The state of Ohio is taking action to reduce lead exposure to its citizens, especially children with Lead Safe Ohio.

The New Program

With recent legislation, the State of Ohio has established the new Lead Safe Ohio program.  The goal of Lead Safe Ohio is to promote the prevention of lead exposure and to promote the reduction of immediate lead hazards in residential properties, congregate care settings, and childcare facilities built before 1978.  The program is administered by the Ohio Department of Development Office of Community Development.

Funding

Importantly, the Lead Safe Ohio program achieves its goals by providing funding through grants to all 88 Ohio counties to conduct lead investigations and assessments, lead abatement, and safe renovations. This program is funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and state funds through the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund (SLFRF).

Local Agencies the Key to Success

Citizens who are interested can apply for funds through local agencies which have been awarded state grants. Guidelines have been established as to who qualifies for the funds.  For example, residential assistance is prioritized to households at or below 80% of the area’s median income (AMI), however, households over 80% AMI may also qualify if certain conditions are met.
